Gather on Kensington Street

A free three-day street festival, with a snack party by Automata’s Clayton Wells, Ester’s Mat Lindsay, Luke Powell of LP’s Quality Meats, Fratelli Paradiso’s Trisha Greentree, Ricos Tacos’ Toby Wilson, and Mitch Orr. Plus, a seafood brunch hosted by Merrick Watts and a bunch of wine events.

Some of Sydney’s best restaurateurs, chefs and winemakers join forces for Gather, a free new street festival on Kensington Street in Chippendale. Stalls, pop-up cellar doors and special events are setting up along Kensington Street and the bars and restaurants that open onto the thoroughfare. It’s the work of all-female events group We Are Gather, which has brought in Automata restaurateur and head chef Clayton Wells, and wine communicator and sommelier Samantha Payne, to curate an A-team of food and drink talent for the weekend.

On the programme? A highlight will be Clayton’s Snack Party. Wells has enlisted a group of ace chefs to bring their best snack game, including Ester and Poly’s Mat Lindsay, Luke Powell of LP’s Quality Meats, Fratelli Paradiso’s Trisha Greentree, Ricos Tacos’s Toby Wilson, and Mitch Orr, who’s about to launch Kiln at the New Ace Hotel in Surry Hills.

A raft of great diners will also have pop-up stalls serving snacks all weekend. Expect Automata, LP’s Quality Meats, Olio, Gavroche, Eastside, The Old Clare and more. Dishes start at just $7.

Wine aficionado and comedian Merrick Watts and Olio executive chef Lino Sauro will host a seafood brunch on the Sunday, while Payne will lead Travel the Mekong, a five-course feast with matching wines. Contemporary Korean diner Jung Sung will pour wines from new-wave Hunter Valley winemaker Vinden all weekend, and Grant Collins (Gin Lane, Cartel) will host tequila and gin masterclasses.

Beautiful new gallery and performance space Phoenix is ​​set to open on the weekend for its first-ever tours, while music and entertainment will take over Kensington Street all weekend.

Want to learn more about wine? Payne and in-the-know sommeliers Mem Hemmings, Louella Mathews and Chris Morrison will host masterclasses to teach punters about up-and-coming Hunter Valley winemakers, cool-climate chardonnay and more. And a bunch of next-gen winemakers will offer tastings all weekend. Expect pours from Vinden, Charteris, Lark Hill, Swinging Bridge, Mallaluka, Sabi Wabi and more.

The party is being held with the help of the NSW Government’s CBDs Revitalization Program, which aims to get people back out into the state’s business districts.

Entry is free, but food and wine are pay as you go, and some events are ticketed.
