Maltese readers receive new material at Sunshine Library

Sunshine Library received a boost to its collection of Maltese literature, thanks to a donation of 40 books from the Maltese Consul General in Melbourne.

Consul General Chirelle Ellul Sciberras visited the library recently to present the donation to councillor Victoria Borg and deputy major Thuy Dang.

A council spokesperson said the addition to the library’s collection would contribute to the community’s celebration and appreciation of Maltese culture.

“Maltese was one of the inaugural language collections of the Sunshine Library back in the early 1980s and there are now over 900 fiction and non-fiction books and a great range of DVDs,” the spokesperson said.

“Books in other languages provide a vital connection to traditions, customs and language.

“This varied new collection of Maltese heritage books will undoubtedly be enjoyed by many, including young people wishing to connect to their through the first language of their parents and grandparents.”

The donation was part of a larger effort which the Consul General has embarked on to reach out to the community and preserve the Maltese language and identity among the Maltese population in Melbourne.

Ms Sciberras thanked Faraxa Publishing and Maria Pia Gauci for their contributions towards the donation.
