Melbourne man allegedly selected 11-year-old assault victim at random

A man has fronted court after he allegedly sexually assaulted a young girl in melbourne yesterday afternoon.

The 31-year-old North Melbourne man appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this afternoon, having been charged with one count of rape.

The court heard the man allegedly attacked the 11-year-old girl at random at a property on Boundary Road, near Racecourse Road, in North Melbourne just before 2pm yesterday.

The girl was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a stable condition shortly after the alleged assault.

The court heard the man was a refugee who had a history of suicidal thoughts and substance abuse.

He did not apply for bail and is due to return to court in October.
